Studies Say Reliable Heating and Cooling in Denver is Badly Needed

It’s official: Denver, Colorado has the third worst urban heat island in the country. This was the conclusion of nonprofit climate news organization Climate Central after analyzing the temperatures of 60 U.S. cities from 2003 to 2014. Denver’s average temperatures have increased by 4.9 °F throughout this timespan, but Las Vegas, Nevada experienced the highest change, with about 7.3 °F. That said, things are actually getting worse everywhere, as Doyle Rice of USA Today reports:

On average, U.S. summer temperatures have increased nearly 2 degrees since 1970, the National Climate Assessment reported earlier this year.

Cities also tend to have many more extremely hot days each year, on average, than nearby rural areas, the report found. Over the past 10 years, cities had an average of at least eight more days over 90 degrees each summer, compared to nearby rural areas.

Which US cities have the worst urban heat islands

Considering that 80 percent of Americans live in densely packed metropolitan areas, it is not surprising that the need for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems in Denver is greater than ever before. Residents can rest easy, though, because Denver heating and cooling experts like Total Plumbing have got their backs. With reliable HVAC installation and maintenance services, households have a higher chance of withstanding the heat island effect that currently lingers in the city, even if neutralizing it altogether is a nigh impossible task.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, a ‘heat island effect’ occurs when an area that is normally permeable and moist becomes dry and watertight, thereby creating a tiny “island” of hot temperature in an otherwise lukewarm or cool region. Cities are most vulnerable to this phenomenon because of the sheer amount of concrete, stone, asphalt, metal, and other impermeable materials that they contain. Heat islands don’t just result in higher electricity consumption but also cause health problems like dehydration and heart ailments among humans and animals, or even death in extreme cases.

The best way for people to cope with a heat island effect is to stay indoors, drink plenty of water, and to keep cool. This means that households should keep their HVAC systems in good condition to stave off the heat. Denver heating and air conditioning companies can step in by performing regular cleanings, inspections, and maintenance whenever needed. These experts also have the expertise to properly repair a damaged air conditioner, which is something untrained individuals should never attempt to do in the first place.
